Join-Up is not a term reserved for cowboys.

April, a lovely thoroughbred mare found foxhunting in New York State took me to the USET try-outs after the Bromont Games and snagged us both a training berth. Dressage was my passion then and I am forever grateful for the students and their horses that supported my continued training.

I still love dressage, but found that training to be seriously lacking and then, tremendously enhanced by the alternative training methods that I have studied during the past few years. (Or perhaps it was becoming a parent…)

People learn differently, as do horses, and the more tools you have in your bag, the better your eye and the more attuned your timing, the better your communication skills will be. Developing the ability to maintain and extend a calm center, sensitive antennae and fast decisions expressed in motion will result in better behavior from your horse.

Acquiring these skills is slow work but an articulate presentation that sets you on the right path can save longs hours of toil. Break it down, make it simple, or as John Lyons puts it, “If he knew it he would do it.”
